During our health mission to Nigeria, we visited three (3) health care centers.

These health care centers were:

  1. Awka Etiti Primary health care center
  2. Nnobi Primary Care Health Care Center and
  3. Fatima Hospital and maternity.

All in Anambra State Nigeria.

Visit to Awka Etiti Community Primary Health Care.

During our visit to Awka Etiti Primary health care Center, our local team leaders were able to interview a patient at the health center who just delivered a baby.

This is what she said:

“Patients were not properly cared for during their stay.

This is because there are no quarters for the nurses to stay overnight. Sometimes when we are in labor and come to the health center, we will almost deliver the baby before the nurses will get to the health center.

There is no bathroom at the health center; they all took showers outside after child birth. She said that though medicine was provided, they are inadequate. State government medication allocation never goes to the patients.

No water for usage before and after child births, no functional toilet available to use.”

VinMabel Foundation team also interviewed the Midwife, Mrs. Bridget Okoli at the health care center. She indicated that she has a lot to share but testified to a few of the common problems as follows:

“No electricity light to use within the facility. The Health Center is using Hurricane lanterns at present. We need generator and supply of fuel to run it. Termite infestation on all interior partition wood walls, the floors are broken.”

Mrs. Okoli also stressed the need for accommodation or quarters, with adequate toilets and bathrooms for the nurses to stay overnight at the Health Center to facilitate emergency response to child birth at night.

In conclusion, Mrs. Okoli is asking for any assistance from the public, government, and individuals to help in providing everything needed to make the place look like an urgent Health Care Center.
